Videos on Great Yarmouth
Drifters / Caller Herrin'
Widely accepted as the model for the propagandist use of cinema, Drifters started a trend in the British Documentary Movement: the heroic dignity of labour. Filmed in Lowestoft, the Shetlands and the North Sea, it is about the drift net fishers of the herring fleet. Its montage sequences, which attracted many aesthetes to his style of film-making, reflect Grierson's brief admiration for the Soviet film-makers. Although there is no footage of Great Yarmouth, it does give an excellent insight into the dangerous and difficult conditions of fishing industry in the early part of the 1900's.

East Anglian Film Archive
The East Anglian Film Archive’s best selling video. The compilation brings together films from the days when fishing was a major industry and Yarmouth was sold as the ‘resort that has everything’. Included in this programme are scenes of Yarmouth in the 1920s, the herring industry, opening of the Haven Bridge by the Prince of Wales in 1930, a 1933 promotional film, the 1953 floods, Breydon Water and 'The Resorts that have Everything' - a publicity film of Yarmouth and Gorleston in the mid 1950s.

Great Yarmouth - History, Herrings & Holidays.
An interesting, if slightly short, insight into the history of Great Yarmouth. The DVD guides us through the medieval times, the fishing era to the present day tourism and industrial times. There are some nice contributions from Colin Tooke and Charles Lewis, but the video footage is rather limited, and it relies heavily on panning stills and tacky media effects.

I've Gotta Horse
A classic musical comedy from the 60's, starring Billy Fury & Amanda Barrie. Location filming was shot in Great Yarmouth and many scenes feature busy tourist areas such as the beach and Britannia Pier. There is also footage of Haven bridge, the Royalty cinema and the harbour's mouth area. The dance routines are appallingly bad, and the songs may seem a bit dated but this is a fantastic & enjoyable film to watch. It is a difficult video to source, but worth the effort.

Malice in Wonderland
Filmed on location in Great Yarmouth in 2009, Malice in Wonderland is a modern transposition of Lewis Carrol's classic Alice in Wonderland. The low budget fantasy film was directed by Simon Fellows, written by Jayson Rothwell and stars Maggie Grace and Danny Dyer.

Seaside Memories
This collection of film clips will take you back to the fun and frivolity that made the British seaside famous. Including popular resorts such as Brighton, Blackpool and Great Yarmouth. Remember elegant piers and grand hotels that have since vanished from the coast or have fallen into disrepair. All the footage in this remarkable video was taken by holiday makers as a part of their treasured holiday memories. The video is only 60 minutes long, and the Yarmouth footage is only 3 or 4 minutes. But still, it is an enjoyable video to watch.
